Hyogo Prefecture | A Diverse Region Where Sea, Mountains, and Cities Harmonize

Located in the western part of Honshu, Hyogo Prefecture stretches from the Sea of Japan in the north to the Seto Inland Sea in the south, offering a wide range of geographical and cultural diversity.

In the south, the city of Kobe has developed as an international port city since its opening to foreign trade. Its cosmopolitan streets and modern urban amenities coexist with a rich historical background, creating a cityscape where tradition meets innovation. Framed by the Rokko Mountains and the sea, Kobe’s unique geography adds to its distinctive charm.

Inland, Hyogo is home to historical treasures such as Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nicknamed the “White Heron Castle” for its elegant, white appearance, it stands as a masterpiece of Japanese castle architecture. Arima Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot spring resorts, has long offered rest and healing to travelers.

To the north, the Tajima region on the Sea of Japan coast is known for its seasonal delicacies such as snow crab (matsuba-gani) and premium Tajima beef. The area retains a way of life deeply connected to nature. In the city of Toyooka, traditional craftsmanship thrives through the production of “Toyooka Kaban” (Toyooka bags), which are highly regarded throughout Japan.

Hyogo Prefecture is a place where ocean and mountains, urban centers and countryside, history and modern life all come together. Each area of the prefecture nurtures its own unique culture and appeal, making it a region of truly multifaceted character.
